Wellington's MP, Gideon Amos, has welcomed news that the town's long-awaited station is "on track."

Network Rail has provided an update on project with a spokesperson saying: "We are working closely with Somerset Council, Gideon Amos MP and Richard Foord MP to progress plans for new stations at Wellington and Cullompton, which have long been aspirations for communities across Somerset and Devon.

"Since the business case was approved as part of the Government Spending Review in July 2025, we have been working with our partners to develop the proposals and look forward to sharing further details in the coming weeks.

“Network Rail intends to use permitted development powers to construct the stations.

"At Wellington, this will require prior approval from the relevant local planning authorities, who will consider matters such as neighbourhood amenity.

"We are continuing to work closely with local authorities and ecology specialists to minimise the impact of construction on the local environment.”

Mr Amos chaired a Metro Board meeting with Network Rail on Friday – attended by Mr Foord and representatives of local authorities – to discuss the joint Wellington and Cullompton Stations project.

He said afterwards: “I’m pleased that we will soon be able to see progress being made on the site, with de-vegetation planned to start before Christmas.

“With contractors lined up, we should have confirmation of the build contract being signed shortly, ahead of construction getting under way.

“I reminded Network Rail of the need to keep residents updated with progress and I am pleased to hear they will be setting up dedicated social media pages to keep people informed, so do keep your eye out for that.”
